Marie Luise Lehner’s debut film, multiple award-winner at the Berlinale and the Diagonale, tells the story of Anna and her deaf mother Isolde, and explores what it means to transform shame about one’s background into pride — a tale of affection, care, and solidarity.

Austria is queer — on screen, too. This retrospective brings together short films by a new generation of filmmakers who look at bodies, identities, and relationships from a queer perspective. Their works resist the expected, search for softness, and play with genre, tone, and form. Some explore queer experience directly, others turn to metaphor, desire, or silence. Together, they sketch a cinematic landscape that’s fragmented, and full of contradictions. Not a history, but a snapshot: of what queer filmmaking in Austria can be today — and how much it still wants to become.
